Chili Hot Chocolate

The streets of NYC are hushed, blanketed, pristine and personal. Outside, the snow is chaotic, pelting the face as you step down onto a sidewalk that has no end. No traffic, only the sound of the wind, snow plows and shovels. People walking in the middle of the road, an easy camaraderie. Inside, a pot of steaming, spiced chocolate on the stove. Shot of bourbon optional.

2 tbsp. drinking chocolate powder
1 tbsp. heavy cream
3 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
pinch of salt
pinch of nutmeg
mint leaves

  1. Break the baking chocolate into small pieces.
  2. Combine all ingredients other than mint leaves. Cook over low-medium heat for 10-15 minutes till melted and smooth.
  3. Pour into an espresso cup. Serve with a sprinkle of chocolate powder, some cayenne pepper and mint leaves. Drink while hot.
