Chili Hot Chocolate

The streets of NYC are hushed, blanketed, pristine and personal. Outside, the snow is chaotic, pelting the face as you step onto a sidewalk that has no end. No traffic, only the sound of the wind, snow plows and shovels. People walking in the middle of the road, an easy camaraderie. Inside, a pot of steaming, spiced chocolate on the stove. Shot of bourbon optional.

1 oz. unsweetened baking chocolate (70% cocoa or darker)
2 tbsp. drinking chocolate powder
1 tbsp. heavy cream
3 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. sugar
pinch of cayenne pepper
pinch of salt
pinch of nutmeg
mint leaves

  1. Break the baking chocolate into small pieces.
  2. Combine all ingredients other than mint leaves. Cook over low-medium heat for 10-15 minutes till melted and smooth.
  3. Pour into a coffee mug. Serve garnished with mint leaves, an additional sprinkle of chocolate powder and cayenne if you dare. Drink while steaming hot.
